Question about patina
«
on:
January 25, 2009, 11:27:36 AM »
Why do most guys seem to want a patina on their copper cups?
I have a nice shiny set of copper cups. I would like to keep them that way, but I can see they have to be polished frequently. Is that the reason? Too much of a pain? Or does everybody just like the patina look?
Any opinions?

Tom,
I like cups with patina but I also like them shiny. To speak with the words of Bruce: the cups will tell you want they want
.
I don't like to polish a great deal, so I will let them turn. With the last three sets I've got I did a lot of polishing. Everytime I handled them I polished them. Now they stand on a table in the livingroom, I am afraid to touch them now, so I think I will let them turn.
I have the same problem with the JP cups, if I let them turn, the patina is awfull. These are cups that need constant polishing.

Some cups look good with a patina, and some don't is what it essentially boils down to; the only way you know, is by experience. Tom, try to form a patina on your Risers, and if you don't like it, polish it away. Like Floyd said that Bruce says, listen to the cups and they'll tell you which way they want to go; if your cups are telling you they don't want to turn, listen to them.

Tom,
I have Cups that have turned and some that are shiny. I look at the Cups and depending on their lines I let them turn or not.
Traditional shaped Cups, I let them all turn.
Brass or Church Bronze, I keep those polished.
Aluminum, I keep those polished.
Copper is kind of half and half…. To me the Mendoza Cups look best shimmy and when I get my Foxy 2.5 they will be kept polished too.
I just received a kit of Mini Riser Cups that were used a lot, their patina is just beautiful… even and coffee and cream in color.
Tom, just know we like you no matter how you like your Cups!
Take care,
Bruce

You guys are OK!
Just as long as they don't turn green like copper pipes and the Statue of Liberty!
Thanks for the insight. Even if I want them to shine, I know the day will come when I get tired of polishing them. Same thing happened with waxing my car.

Bruce,
You said --- "I look at the Cups and depending on their lines I let them turn or not." That sounds like the voice of experience!

At least cups are easier to handle; they're not as big as a car!
