The Dreaming Madman

« on: June 28, 2009, 09:46:53 PM »

A very great man started one of the strongest speeches of all times, with the words "I Have A Dream..." For the better part of my life I have heard those words over and over. They will always be words that move me.

So, it is here and now I state to the Magic World.

"I HAVE A DREAM...."

For sometime now, I have asked my fellow Cupers, and Cup Junkies. How they felt about a Cups and Balls Convention?

Some have loved the idea, and some have said "Yes, only if it is only done this way." There have been words that were kind, and there were some "Not so kind" words. At one point, lines were drawn in the sand and a few "Wars of Words", forced people to come and go here at CupsCon. Some we called friends, and some we called foes.

Never the less, I still believed in "The Dream".

It was just a short time ago, I had dinner with a very smart man. I like to think of him as a friend. Even if I made a very bad first impression. Roll Eyes

We talked about this crazy "Dream" of mine, and he asked when is this thing going to happen? He sat there with me in this Greek Dinner. As, I started to tell my tale of "The Dream" and the highs and lows that have plagued the road it has taken so far. As I talked, I started to feel myself loose steam. It just started to feel like my story was just too long. Hell, everyone knows how I hate to just talk, and talk.  Wink

I started to hear the voices that have plagued me from the start.

The ones telling me....
               "It is a pipe dream."

"Cups and Balls is too small of target."

"It is just an old trick that has no market today."

"No one is ever going pay to come to a convention if it was not held in the right town, and with the right people."

When I stopped telling my tale. He looked at me, and told me about how he had looked over all the post on the site. That is when he explained to me that I was too busy trying to make everyone happy. It was right then, with those words. A spark came back to me. "You are wasting your time and energy with that." People start conventions small for a reason. It takes time to build.....

This is when my little "Madman" popped up on my shoulder, and said. "Duhh... Steamer Head! Rome was not built in a day.

That is when he told me of a convention that I had never heard of before. How there was a reason I had not before heard of it. This was not due to it only being held when only three plants where aligned with the sun. It was because, that not a lot of people went to it, and that was how they liked it. The group kept it small for that reason. To tell you the truth, at first I did not understand. Well, until he explained more, and after he explained it all to me. OK, this is the sick part. "I saw the light." Tongue I did say it was sickening.

No, I did not hear any music!

We talked on more for hours about a lot of things that night. Now, I did my best to tell a few jokes. Some he laughed at, and some he didn't. To tell you the truth, I think he was just being kind by laughing at the ones he did. I was just on my "A" game that night. Even after all of that, I had a great time. I took away a lot that night.

I had seen that I have so much to learn when it comes to the stage. Plus, I had learned of a new way to look at a convention. It had given me a new spark, and I needed time to think, and that is what I did........

Till next time,

Sean
