I have a really weird computer problem which is related to my browsers. If anyone on the list is familiar with Windows XP Pro 64 bit, please drop me an e-mail at curator@cupsandballsmuseum.com.

To amplify the above post -- it's about all my browsers behaving strangely on the same machine.

Problem solved -- I figured it out.

Just FYI, here's what was happening.

I have a web site that's been up for years and years -- www.billpalmer.com. I don't visit it often. It's related to my activities back when I was performing magic full time -- sort of a scrapbook more than anything else.

So, last week, I tried to log onto the site from my desktop computer, and when I did, Firefox would crash. I tried this also with IE 8, Opera and Safari. I could access the page from my other computers, but not this one. I tried changing the name of the index page, moving it to another server and all sorts of other remedies. Nothing worked. My IT specialist here could log on without any problem, but when he looked at the raw HTML code, couldn't find anything that would keep the page from working.

Right after I posted the first message here, I decided to try logging on with Chrome. I discovered that I did not have Chrome installed on my computer. So I downloaded it and installed it.

When I tried to go to that web page, it came right up. Then, the browser asked me to install Java. So I installed the current version of Java for this operating system (XP Pro 64 bit), got an error message, but Java finally installed. The page still came up with Chrome, but not with the other browsers.

Then I put two and two together. (Bear in mind that I am not a computer guy. What I know about computers is strictly from hard experience.)  I figured that somewhere in all of the upgrades to Java, something had gotten corrupted. So I uninstalled Java and all of the updates. I restarted the computer, launched Chrome and reinstalled Java. That did the trick. All my browsers are working perfectly now.
