Yesterday we buried Carol. The funeral started late because the fellow who was trying to operate the PA system could not get the CD player to operate. There was no technician on call for them to get to make the system work. I had prepared a CD with four of her favorite pieces. When they asked "What will we do?" I told them that I would go home and get something that we could play the music on.
The funeral director asked, "Can you be back on time?"
I looked him in the eye and said, "When I get back is, by definition, on time."
So, we got the music to work. The service went as planned.
I had composed a eulogy that I could not read, so the minister did the honors in my place. That eulogy is on the net now at
http://www.carolhpalmer.com/eulogy.htm .
After the service, we had a piper play her from the hearse to the lowering device with the Skye Boat Song, which was one of her favorite tunes. There was a brief prayer, then they lowered her as the piper played Flowers of the Forest, a pibroch that she really liked.
There were about 150 people in attendance, including magicians, Scottish Country Dancers, close friends and members of my high school senior class.
After the services we went to a mediterranean restaurant and had a lovely buffet. The ladies who took care of those arrangements chose this restaurant because they do not serve alcohol, and we didn't want a "scene."
It worked very well.
